Matt, Satin or Gloss: How to Pick the Right Finish for Every Room

Royaltec Team · 12 July 2026

The finish you pick changes how a room looks and how long the paint stays fresh. Matt hides wall flaws but marks easily. Gloss survives scrubbing but shows every bump. Satin sits in between. Here is how to choose, room by room.

Matt: soft, calm and forgiving

Matt paint has almost no shine, so it hides hairline cracks, patch repairs and uneven plaster better than any other finish. That makes it the safe choice for bedrooms, ceilings and pooja rooms, where you want a calm look and the walls do not get touched much. The trade-off: matt marks more easily, and scrubbing can leave a polished patch.

Satin: the all-rounder for busy rooms

Satin (also called silk or soft sheen) carries a gentle glow that takes wiping without losing its look. Pick it for living rooms, kids' rooms, hallways and staircases, anywhere hands, school bags and furniture keep brushing the walls. Most homes we paint across Madurai and Coimbatore use satin in the main living areas for exactly this reason.

Gloss: built for scrubbing

Gloss is the toughest of the three and the easiest to clean, but its shine highlights every dent and wave in the surface. Use it on doors, window frames, grills and railings rather than large walls. On metal, pair it with a primer so the shine lasts instead of peeling.
